After the Mutan incident of the late Qing Dynasty, Shen Paochen was ordered to come to Taiwan to guard and defend the coast. A Western-style fortress was built from scratch to defend against foreign powers. A hundred years later this ancient city lives alone as quietly as a history book. Read carefully, the pages no longer rumble with canon fire but the moat is still there surrounding the fort. Strong defense against foreign aggression has faded since Shen Paochen inscribed the wording "The mainstay for thousand stuff" on a mottled wall flashing in the restrained light. The Eternal Golden Castle is still impregnable, guarding the peace and beauty of Tainan.
